Multiple windows, one instance?

Hey, I've just been trolling through the Dual Pane discussions and the rest of the wishlist, and I haven't been able to find anything about this.
I tend to use multiple windows when doing complex file foo; the dual pane thing dosn't really strike me as wonderful unless I'm actually doing a folder diff sort of operation.
I've been dissuaded from doing this much with XY as I don't want to deal with non-propegating settings. If I had two windows open and I make a new boxed branch or mark something as a favorite or generally update any of the lists aside from the fore/back history, I'd want the same to happen in any other running windows.
On the other hand, if I hid the tree in one window, I wouldn't want that change to propegate ^_-.
Any thoughts?
