Video length isn't shown for mp4 but is for mkv

Does anyone know why? I'm speaking of the Length field on hover in the info tip.
Inside '"Select Standard Fields" I have Length checked.
When I hover over any mkv, the box includes a Length field. For mp4, however, it does not. I was curious if avi would, and it does.

XY version, OS, do you have a preview of .mp4 in the preview pane?

Current version, Win11
I normally have preview pane off, but I enabled it and yes, all videos show up there.

Assuming the length field is #27, what do you get when you select an MP4 file and run this script:
This will work as well if you use an English UI:

Yes, it's 27.

Each script just returns this when an mp4 is selected:
Echo
Whereas if I select an mkv and run the same, it does in fact return the length beneath the word Echo.

MP4 videos play in the
preview tab (F12)?

Yes to the preview playing, which is one reason I keep that off.

No audio, no video info. I'd say your codec is broken. Try to install the K-Lite codec package

If it was broken, wouldn't you expect mp4s to show a problem beyond this one narrow aspect?
I happen to already use K-Lite, so that's covered. I update it about once a week, so it's extremely current.

I see that even the shell doesn't provide the minimal bit of info about that type of container. So in that aspect: Yeah, it's broken.

Mediafinfo, the little helper app that K-Lite installs, knows all about it when invoked on a right-click, so that's another thing not showing a problem.

How unexpected that mediainfo can read the metadata of that file *irony off*
Does Windows Explorer show the length of that file? If not: Again, it's broken^^

Good idea. Yes, it does (once I enabled that column anyway, which I don't normally have on in Explorer).
