+ Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | Show folder thumbnails: If a folder is not empty, but does not contain anything that can be used to generate a folder thumbnail, it will now display the yellow background square without an image, as opposed to empty folders, which only display the folder icon.
I want to revert this functionality because these yellow squares are too big and distracting.

I would be okay if we could change the size of these squares, relative to the selected thumbnail size (e.g. 128 x 128)

Even though my thumbnail size is 128x128, the yellow square is 132x132 pixels, even bigger than my selected thumbnail size.

Would be better if it was 57% of selected thumbnail size. (e.g. 57% of 128x128 = 74x74 pixels, almost same size as original Windows folder icon.

Yes, it's a complete eyesore, and I have no idea why it was requested in the first place. (Ever think about just not having empty folders in your system?)

A smaller icon (similar to the Windows File Explorer one with piece of paper inside) would probably be preferred. Personally, I don't mind it either way, as long as there is a distinction like there is now.

Can confirm. The folder thumbnails are a tad bigger than the file thumbnails and defined sizes.

Any system comes with empty folders by default, with more added over time automatically. Also, folders are empty before they could get or are filled up. ;)

The reason for the request was that by default the icon shown was that of an empty folder. Being able to confuse folders containing files with empty ones surely is a major issue, especially if you don't want to have and want to get rid of empty folders like you just recommended.

Yeah I agree, icons would be better than the color square, bizarrely the actual correct "folder with contents" icon shows up when MDBU on the colored square, but even more weird is that only seems to work reliably for me until sort is changed, otherwise have to leave folder and then return for it to begin to work again, or go back to original sort, so not sure if that gives you a clue on how to retrieve that particular icon Don.

I agree. That v24.40.0107 change wasn't a good solution. I'll undo it and look for something better.

Perhaps (an option to) invoke the shell thumbnail for the folders without thumbnail images, opposed to it picking and using the default/empty Windows folder icon? That seems most straightforward and least prone to errors and issues to me, with XY already able to use folder shell icons.

So upon generating the thumbnails, when such is not possible, use the shell icon. Then it all works as intended, and scripts generating their own thumbnails would still overwrite that and work fine too.

I tried that this morning, but ran into other problems. The shell icons (like everything in the shell) are slow, buggy, and the transparent areas are hard to adjust to the current background color. This is obviously very old Windows code that has been dragged on crutches from version to version for decades.

I'm looking for something else, something independent of the shell. And I have an idea that will work even with non-thumbnail views. Patience...

No reaction???

I think the CFI solution is very cool (my God, I even use it myself)! (see change log v24.40.0201 - 2023-05-30 15:23: viewtopic.php?p=211506#p211506)

Just checked it, and found it really useful.
I wonder if the "Access denied" state could have a switch too? :titter:

"Access denied" ... yes, I also feel the urge to fill that gap. :)

And then perhaps an option for the folders that the majority of files are..

The solution to the "empty or not" folder icon problem is so simple...

After following this thread for sometime and making some of the earlier suggested changes I have thrown them all out and gone back to the default. Why? Because I prefer the larger thumbnails the default creates compared to the chopped off cropped thumbnails Windows has.

Yes, this does make a completely empty folder look the same as an empty folder with subfolders on my system except...
by using Color Filters, the name of the completely empty folder has a red background and is thus clear and obvious.

In the Tools / Configuration under Colors and Styles / Color Filters ... add...

Code: Select all

B:prop:#empty:2|pf //s-shape, w-wide, f-frame,b-2pixels
check the tick box to turn it on and "Define" the text and background colours to personal taste - and job done!

So you weren't serious? :) Well, I was! And it made me detect and fix a bug: Certain junctions are "accessed denied" but their targets are not. CFI did not handle these right ... up to now!

Of course I was serious. I just put it in a way that didn't seem "pressing"... ;)

Edit2add:
And the wish for the majority of content still stands.. (but it's not that pressing of course)
