Why do xyplorer have both a "type column" and an "extension column" in the detail view? The two are always the same

Are you certain? Have you actually set up both to display?

As phred already showed, you are wrong, they are never the same.
One program my support many extensions which all have the type of it.

Common example: jpg vs jpeg

I was confused because it also writes the extension in the type column
For example, if the extension is jpg, write jpg in the type column, and if the extension is jpeg, write jpeg in the type column.
That's why I was saying what is the need for it
But now I understand that the type column is for those who both want to type and want to see the extension, but the extension column is for those who want to see only the extension.

It all depends on the registry.
