Stackable tabs, allow tabs on more than one row.

I really like the tab feature. I find myself running out of tab space on a single row. Please create an option to enable tabs on multiple rows.

Maybe add a configuration option for 'Tabs'.

"Enable tabs on < # > row(s)"

And the user enters a value for #.

This has been asked for before:

and rejected because Don (Admin) is not convinced that it might be useful. Especially since XYplorer's philisophy is to reduce the number of working tabs.

However, to handle users who work with many tabs, XYplorer has two features:

1) Iconize: you can right click on any tab and iconize it, meaning you can shrink the tab to a mere icon.
2) Rename tabs: You can rename the tabs to something shorter and go to config (F9) > tabs and check "Flexible width for named tabs". This way tabs are as small as the name you provide and you can accomodate many tabs in a row.

And yes, Don has rejected this before...as I recall, it was also that it would cause too many issues with the layout/GUI, so the two solutions given by serendipity have solved most of these user issues, it seems.

Well now I'm bummed, I use a bunch of mapped network drives and there's just too many tabs to put on one line (even with the flexible width feature). I tried to iconize but it's just not working for me (they all look the same, even with custom icons it would be too much). I mentioned to Don that he should exploit the feature that really sets this product apart from others. One of the main features of XYplorer is the multiple tabs. Maybe cascading tabs would be a good idea, probably even trickier though. I'll take more tabs any way I can get it.

So...as someone who has never had more than about 5-6 tabs open, can you give me some clues as to why one needs to have so many tabs active at one time? Given the numerous ways that XY lets you get to another location quickly, such as Catalog, and the fact that you can only have one tab currently active, I'm just not catching on...ok, so I'm likely not that aquainted with mapped network environments in XY, and looking for some background to better understand your issue.

I have a number of network drives, and major folders under them, and I use the Catalog. I have a catalog section set up for the various folders and I use one tab, clicking on the catalog entry I want to switch it between folders. If I want a second tab (for drag & drop, or whatever) I shift-click the catalog entry.

Personally, I find this easier than having huge numbers of tabs open (one row or more) but you may think otherwise...

How would you do what you want without XYplorer, though?

In a perfect world I would use between 20 - 30 tabs, all with flexible widths. I have many projects going at the same time, each project has 4 or 5 locations which utilize a "locked home zone" tab. If I could color code the tabs as well it would help to manage 20 or 30 at the same time.

I tried using the catalog feature but after creating many catalog links I find that it eats into the size of my folder tree in the left pane.

For my scenario, if I could create multiple home tabs (1 per project) and then cascade a number of tabs (~5) under the home tab, that would work as well. But I'm pretty sure that would be a lot more effort for the developer.

You could use parallel instances of XYplorer, one for each project, and thus outsource the stacking to the task bar...

Currently not. If a tab would be only a pointer to a location then it would be relatively easy to implement, but a tab is more than that and exporting/importing tabs would need a new file format (*.tabset) plus a management interface; the whole would be similar to the handling of search templates.

Okay, I now did a quick & dirty implementation of a tabset switcher using Catalog Categories as storage containers. I had this on some of my lists since long and it can be refined in many nice ways later... (adding tab names, visual filters, searches) .. but the basic job of switching tabsets is already working nicely.

It's me again. I just upgraded to the latest XYplorer v8.70 and I lost some of my precious tab space. It seems the folder list now cuts into the space where I used to have tabs, whereas the tab row used to span the entire width of the XYplorer window (v7.90). I'm guessing somebody else requested XYplorer maximize the folder list size and the tab row width suffered. Either that or perhaps the author is preparing to accommodate the stackable tabs I requested a while back. I'm still thinking a config option to "tab wrap" would be beneficial to many people out there. Kinda like a "word wrap" in notepad.

I keep using the utility every day and am otherwise very happy with it's performance, power and configurability. I have recommended the utility to many friends in the workplace and will continue to do so.

Welcome back again! So did I read you correctly that you previously had v7.90? If so, then...you have a LOT of catching up to do! And part of that (which relates to your query) is Dual-Pane as of v8.00!

Implementing that caused some changes to the layout and tab row width was part of that...so here's one thread from a while back that seems similar to your issue:
