"Office Files" ... hmm...

Post by admin »

Configuration | Preview | Previewed Formats | Category: Office Files

"Office Files" is a dumb term, somewhere between a real office and MS Office, and both is wrong. These are complex files (or file types) which need specialized software for preview and thumbnails (preview handler, thumbnail provider). That's the only thing they have in common.

A  for anyone who can think of a better name for this category!

Not bad!

Since all the others end with "Files", would "Document Files" work as well? Or is it un-English?

Documents is fine except not all "Office files" are documents, some spreadsheets, notekeeping files, presentation slides, etc.

Even the Thesaurus couldn't list any names that were "inclusive"

I always use "Docs" to name folders where I curate the "Office files" and others like html, mht, pdf. Of course "Docs" is a slang expression for "Documents".
There's also ebooks with a myriad of extensions like .epub, .azw, .mob, etc. and there's absolutely no one out there that has a previewer for those.

To show them in XYplorer's preview pane?

Ofc you could preview at least mobi / epub with Sumatra PDF (there was a specific version that could do that but the forum moved to github and the old post seems to be lost).
Write me a pm if you need the installation file (x86/x64)...

Not all of the selections in the category are "MS" or "Office" files so I think "Doc Files" or "Document Files" are good generic options.

So "Document Files" works well in English?

Thats wrong :D
In Total Commander there is a plugin named SLister which uses SumatraPDF.
SumatraPDF can show epub since many versions.
Unfortunately I didn't not found a Explorer preview which would also solve it for XY.

Double-checking some other file management/utility apps, indeed each one used the phrase "Document Files" to describe this category.

If you have a book viewer / reader like Calibre Portable, you'll have thumbnails, MDBU, hover box, and have preview for epub, mob, etc.

It's been way too long since I installed it. Maybe something else is at work here. The exec file is named, "calibre-portable.exe" in a Calibre Portable folder.
