appicon; seems to no longer have effect on taskbar icon

(XYplorer 24.20)
While "appicon;" still launches the app icon selector and changes the small in-app icon, it appears to not change the taskbar icon, etc. like it used to.
It appears that now the legacy app icon is used by default, unchanged by the "appicon;" setting.

Are you sure? The taskbar takes a while to adjust to such changes.

1. Alternate icon (new red version) was set several months ago on systems, and the taskbar showed the alternate icon.
2. This setting remained for months, and the taskbar icon remained the alternate new version.
3. No further changes were made to the systems' icon selection, but after recent updates, the taskbar reverted to the standard (old) icon.
4. Double-checking the "appicon;" selector, the alternate red icon was still selected.
We tried changing the icon and waiting for days a few times, but no "appicon;" setting now seems to change the taskbar icon from the standard old icon.

Not a solution to appicon, but to change the taskbar icon I changed the icon (and name) of XYplorer.lnk under C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\XYplorer
Somehow (even when opened outside of the Start Menu, like as a default file manager), it uses that icon for me. It also shows that name in the Start Menu, and I placed a shortcut to it on my desktop, which virtually changes it everywhere except for in the application itself (for which appicon was still said to work).
