I don't think so. It's a valuable resource if you have e.g. Adobe Acrobat (not the reader) installed but need to use a different preview handler (or is the problem gone that previewing .pdfs with Adobe Acrobat can crash XY?)

Whenever there is a new tip posted on this, I give it a go, only to be disappointed again and again.
I haven't been able to get a bigger MDBU or Hover preview for PDF's any bigger than about 30x40mm for quite some time now, which unfortunately doesn't help much.

I have the sam PDF-XChange Editor as you.
Enlarging the view with MDBU works here for many PDFs but no for all.
Not a big problem as the Quick view pane always works fine.

No, I have a 2 pane layout and normaly use the preview pane.
But it also works fine with the floating preview and in single pane mode.
Conclusion, some XY settings must make the Difference in your system
as we both have the same PDF preview handler.
Btw. does the preview work in Explorer using the same PDF file for a test ?

Ralph, some tested systems encountered exactly the same issue you describe.

This is what fixed it in those cases...

Download the latest PDF-XChange Editor here:
https://www.tracker-software.com/product/downloads

Run the installer and select Custom Setup.
Be sure to expand the components list and include all Plugins, Browsers Plugins, and Shell Extensions.

After this, ensure you've added and enabled a user-defined handler in XYplorer here:
Configuration > Preview > Previewed Formats > Categories > User-Defined Preview Handlers

It seems that sometimes, even if you have performed a full installation of PDF-XChange before, subsequent installs and activities of other .pdf applications can override the previous (preferred) associations and settings.

Also, after the above, in XYplorer try unchecking:
Configuration > Other > Shell Integration > Use 64-bit preview handlers for preview

I followed them to the dot but unfortunately my PDF preview problems still persist.

Maybe I need to clarify again that my problem is rather with the hover & MDBU previews (which I think are using thumbnails), which used to be big enough in the past to get an idea of the pdf's contents but these days I don't even bother anymore because at only 30x40mm it is very hard to see anything.

It's interesting; after observing exactly the same issue ("Cannot decode" on MDBU and Hover Box) for weeks, fully reinstalling the latest version of PDF-XChange Editor resolved the issue here. Sorry to hear it didn't help in your case.
