xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
Thank You for Your kind reply, and Your patient explanation.
I get it now, although, quite frankly, a bit of mystery seems to remain to me. If I (just *me*, not You) had a memory leak from some shell extension (maybe a screwed up Windows thing, like Media Player), then - off course - *You* would not see any memory leak on Your PC. And regarding this "race condition", I wonder, why only XYplorer and not any other program (including other file explorers like Total Commander) ? But, as You say, if You cannot reproduce it, that kills any further research for You. You are also bang-on right about the fact that time heals many things. I am sure this will eventually resolve itself. Maybe when I switch to another laptop one day. MANY THANKS !

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
Hi! I am just reusing this thread to report the following RTE, which I have unexpectedly experienced today. XY was opened and untouched for a long time and then - apparently as soon as it regained focus hours later, it happened. But allas, I believe that there were several RTE dialogues, one immediately after the other, of which this was the last one. So, it is questionable if this can help.

Good enough for me, thanks! Should not happen again.

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
As Borat, sorry Borut, said : "as soon as it regained focus hours later, it happened".
I want to add some further info about this problem, if anyone is checking this, and I don't know if it will help any.
On my system, crashes happen most often (some 90 % of cases) when I create a new folder. A crash NEVER happens when I, for example, create a text file, or any other file ... only when I create a folder.
Occasionally (some 10 % of cases) crashes happen on regaining focus : e.g. I do something in XYplorer's right pane (on some tab), then I move on to work on left pane ... when I touch a tab in right pane to activate it - bang ! - the crash happens.
Does this suggest that the crashes have something to do with how XYplorer is tracking the sub-folder list ? Like : something gets misread, or overwhelmed ?
Just wondering ...

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
Is that with the latest beta? Because I recently fixed some potential crashes...

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
Admin, this is with the latest stable version 24.90.0100,
and has been going on for years ...
Maybe (just maybe, I am not sure), old version 21.20.0200
was not doing this. The reason that I am not so sure is
because I was using another laptop then with Windows 8,
so we are comparing apples and oranges perhaps.
I would be happy to try the new beta version that You are writing about.
Please give me the direct download link.

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
Thanks, I will give it a try.
If You cannot reproduce my system settings, then the best solution is for ME to test it.
BECAUSE the crashes are random, You may get my FEEDBACK - either very soon (bad news : crash occurs soon), or perhaps in a few days (I need a few crash-free days to be sure, but that would be the good news = issue resolved).

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
First impressions of the new beta after one hour (of using it) or so :
Good news :
I immediately started creating new folders like a maniac - trying to provoke a crash, but no crashes so far, either with this salvo, or with subsequent regular use. This alone is an improvement - if nothing else !
Bad news :
after roughly one hour, I did have a crash after entering a folder (double click to enter) with LOTS of files (hundreds) and sub-folders (dozen or so). It is that second scenario - entering/reentering of a "big" folder with expected refreshing of view.
Summary :
so far no crashes with massive creation of new folders, if this holds - than You have indeed fixed one of the problems. Even if I do eventually get a crash with a folder creation - I think they would be less frequent now, but lets see. I will give You an update in a day or two. Thanks !!

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
I suppose the new stable version 25.00
includes Your fixes that we are testing here.
If You can confirm that
then I would continue this testing with version 25.00.

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
OK, here we are with testing results on my system
(Windows 10, Lenovo laptop, shell extensions disabled
in portable XYplorer Configuration) :
After almost 1 full day of testing the beta version 24.90.0141
I had one crash with folder creation, and one crash on regaining focus.
It might feel like a slight disappointment, but this score is significantly
lower than what I had before, i.e. crashes are now less common.
So we do have an IMPROVEMENT here !
These crashes do not happen at all on my other laptop
which is Toshiba with Windows 8.
I am glad that these crashes are not massively reported by users
according to administrators that responded to my problems.
Maybe it is an interference by some Lenovo back-ground program,
there are a few - like "Lenovo Utilities.exe" etc.
These are allegedly supposed to speed up my laptop,
so I am reluctant to shut them down.
I will now switch to the latest stable XYplorer version 25.00.
Maybe some future tweak will fix my issue.
Thanks for Your time, Admin !

Re: xyplorer crashes unexpectedly
"Lenovo Utilities.exe" ... thanks for pointing out a possible source of the problem.
