Autofit name column
Autofit name column
No matter what numbers I try in the Autofit name column -the outcome is not useful or consistent.
Can I assume the measurement units are characters. It used to be manual drag for each folder, which was ideal - now it has been altered.
This is important because I use many names more than 200 characters long.

Re: Autofit name column
I don't understand your goal here, are you trying to keep it small or make it larger? That screenshot makes it look like there's no empty space to the right of your modified column, if that's the case you'd have to remove columns or expand the window size to free up space. I believe it's a pixel-based number, not character.
If there is empty space to the right of your modified column and you want to fill it with the name column, set the maximum column width to 0, which will disable the maximum and expand the name column to use all available space in the pane.
Set the minimum to 0 to collapse the name column all the way down to the icon, if the pane size gets too small to hold everything. A higher minimum size will enable a horizontal scroll-bar when the name column reaches that minimum, useful if you want a small window size but don't want a truncated name column.

Re: Autofit name column
My goal is to limit the name area and be able to work on the dates. It was great before where one could have different amount of name displayed depending on which folder.
A typical task involves selecting a number of files that may be related or whatever. Then change all of them to the same date. Sorting by modified puts this select group of files in alpha order.
Thanks for your reply.

Re: Autofit name column
If you are using a large font on a small screen, you need to think about the columns you are showing. Do you really need that Index column, the Path column, the Type column? If you remove them you will get the space you need for the Name column.

I am using twin 4K monitors and all the hardware that goes with them. This is used to maintain a 2TB database on two or more SSDs and HDs. Since your software now has ‘instant’ searches we rely on that far more now than in the past. Where stuff is stored is no longer of prime importance. The long file names with all the proper keywords are where the value of instant information is found.
My friend and I have done a lot of experimenting and testing. The attached shows exactly what we need and want to see. As an example, the type is needed because we mix all kinds of files jpg, word, gif, PDFs, etc.
The narrow Name field was the result of “Autofit 275/575” We only need to view to be able to view a number of characters at the front end of the Name field to accept or reject files or folders. What number of name characters may be needed varies with the information sought and what may be available.
A few months back we were able to drag and adjust the number of characters that were best that day. I understand that you are making a lot of changes for the better. This ended up being for the worse here and no doubt many others.

Re: Autofit name column
The font size in your second shot is much larger. Is that on purpose?

Font size has not been a problem this far. Ctrl+Mouse wheel is in constant use here??

Re: Autofit name column
I would say either untick Configuration | Colors and Styles | Styles | Columns | Autofit the width of the Name column, or raise the minimum value of Configuration | Colors and Styles | Styles | Columns | Minimum / Maximum Name column width. Both solutions seem to work fine here.

Re: Autofit name column
Hi Don, your proposed fixes worked partially.
Untick name column - goes to some sort of maximum name width. When I drag it to another value – the name width is not saved.
Out of a clear blue sky, I changed the values from 275/575 to 1275/1575 and actually got a nice useable name column see attached – Again when I drag it to another value – the name width is not saved. I SURE WISH IT COULD BE SAVED and not go back to the computed value every time I start XY or transact in a different column.
Did you not have that before and it was lost in some transaction some months ago?
All other software that I can think of saves all the column widths that you alter by some setting. Is this not what you intend to have in XY?
