If the tree expands a lot of folders, the startup speed will be very slow, solved by locking the tree.

Ah, sure. Your comment was too brief for my understanding. I was aware of that post.

Locking didn't seem to help.

OK, so nothing is in your Status Bar template. I'd also suggest opening XYploer.ini (Tools > Open Configuration file) and do a search in your editor for "status" and look for any entries which may be causing over 2.6 seconds on load time. The are many status bar tweaks in XYplorer.ini, (e.g., StatusBar1TotalBytes=).

I didn't notice anything.

My StatusBar1TotalBytes=0

Crazy thing is that both my computers are set up almost exactly. One is newer, the other is about 10 years older. I have had xyplorer working on this older computer perfectly fast, but not sure how it got messed up. I recently did a reformat due to something crashing my computer....and upon reformat, this older computer still works great...and the mysterious crashing went away.

This slow use of xyplorer has been my only challenge!!!

Crazy, so I decided just to uninstall and reinstall, then load the same settings from my faster computer.
Wala, sort of.

here is my new load times:

Super. I can use it as soon as I open xyplorer.....except, that when I click on another folder, It normally hangs several seconds per new folder.

News flash....in the middle of writing this, I found that I could not connect to a couple of mapped drives to my NAS. As it turned out, I had changed my windows password which was previously the same as my NAS...but after changing it, I had not tried to log into my nas again. When I tried right now, and reset the user credential for the nas drives, xyplorer works like it should.

So, as I see it, something was wrong with the orginal install...because I had slow operation prior to changing my windows password. A simple uninstall and reinstall would have worked, except I had another windows credential issue that xyplorer was trying resolve, but couldn't until I re-entered my nas password.

Wowzers...

Thank you all for your help walking through this. I appreciate your considerate input.

Wasn't sure if i should start a new thread, or use the same.

After i was able to resolve the slow start....i have now begun to encounter very slow use after startup. Many times, switching from folder to folder will incur several seconds of delay. During those times, if i use windows explorer, that doesn't incur any delay.

This problem doesn't happen 100% of the time; more like 80% of the time.

Do you have suggestion?

Hm, I see nothing that could explain slowness. When you say "switching from folder to folder", how exactly do you do that?

double click on various folders, either in the tree on left, or window on right.

tree needs single-click only

Windows sometimes does heavy things in the background that slow everything down. Explorer gets special priorities that other software doesn't necessarily get. Check the Task Manager to see what is eating up your CPU.

While i could understand that, i nearly never have more than 50% cpu or memory or disk writing when the slowness happens.

Sure, i have dropbox going with a rather large sync index, and i also use x1 search. both of those can be heavy at times. However, the slowness doesn't seem to correlate.

And certainly, this doesn't happen at all on a new computer of mine. XY flies on that one and used to fly on the one i'm speaking of now.
