Get error that file xy64ctxmenu.exe can't be accessed for writing (I think that's correct). I was updating from the Help menu. After the 1st error, I turned off my AV software (Trend Micro) and tried again. Same problem. So I went to web site, downloaded trial version (full, zip file), ran that file. Same problem.

The issue isn't with installers. It appears that xy64ctxmenu.exe isn't killed while the installer tries to update it. Try searching for this process in taskmanager and kill it.
Alternatively, run the following command from command prompt and then update XY.
taskkill /im XY64ctxmenu.exe /F 2> NUL

And now I've had HUGE problems with the new version.
Takes 30 seconds to open, minutes and minutes to update thumbnail views
Task manager shows 4 instances of XYplorer running and I can't kill the last one
I uninstalled with RevoUninstaller, which says there's a file and a folder which will be deleted on next boot (xyplorer.exe and its parent folder)
Shutdown takes more than 15 minutes
Tried to install previous version (20.8, I think). That fails because xyplorer.exe still wasn't deleted it this time it can't write to XYplorer.exe
EGADS!!! FIX THIS, PLEASE! Right now I'm back to File Explorer. I've been using XYplorer since February 2011. I can't live without it!

I can't seem to install the new version, or the previous version. So I've downloaded the 'no-install' version and extracted the files to a folder on my hard drive. I click on xyplorer.exe to run it. Splash screen comes up, saying this is the trial version, with options to continue trial, buy, or quit. I select continue, intending to put in my key once it's running. NO DICE. It shuts down and WILL NOT RUN A 2ND TIME!
This is a new computer. I'm not having any problems with other programs. What has happened to XYP? Donald Lessau, where are you???

Open a command prompt
Execute:
tasklist | findstr /i /c:"xy"
Show a screenshot of the results...

First, let me say that I've finally got the "uninstalled" version going. I was running xyplorer but closed it before I came back to the forum. It was NOT running when I executed the command. The result was
Screen shot.jpg
That's the same file that couldn't be closed when I updated from within the program -- the file that started this whole thing. I suppose it's purpose is to add items to the context (i.e. right-click) menus.
The problem I've having now is with the thumbnails. When I'm in thumbnail view and open a folder of 400-500 PhotoShop files for the 1st time, it's so slow (sometimes 3-5 MINUTES) I think the machine is hung. When the folder is finally open, ~25% of the Photoshop psd files don't have a thumbnail. And scrolling up and down -- which used to get them to appear -- doesn't fix this. I have to open each one in PhotoShop and resave. Bummer -- I have 100s of psd files!

Is it first time you're going to this folder with 500 PSD. I'm not sure how much time it takes for single PSD as I've stayed away from them. However; if this is persistent, do check these two settings
F9 > Thumbnails (will be under Preview heading)
Cache thumbnails on disk - Tick this (so that subsequent browse is quick)
Create all thumbnails at once - Untick this (so that you don't have to wait for long on folders where thumbnails are not yet cached)

And Configuration | Preview | Thumbnails | Quality is set to high speed?

I have things under control now. I did a couple of things:
1. I uninstalled, then reinstalled the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack (which I need to see thumbnails for PSD files) with the latest version. I think that was a big part of the problem. Now I have thumbnails for every one of my more than 5,000 Photoshop files! And for the first time, I also have thumbnails for my InDesign (desktop publishing program) files and I see the 1st page of PDF files!
2. I moved the folder containing the 'no install' version of XYplorer from the hard drive (D) to the solid-state drive, C:\Users\Public. I changed my thumbnail settings from 'Crisp' to 'High Speed'. XYplorer was creating thumbnails (writing the files to the SSD) at a rate of about 2,000 per minute, so I changed the setting to 'Create all at once'. There's just a 1-2 second pause when switching to a new folder of 500+ PSD files.
The only remaining glitch is that if I've closed XYplorer in thumbnail view, when I reopen, there's sometimes that 30 second delay. Once the status bar had a message about 'rebuilding lists'. I don't know what lists it means, but it's nice to know it's not in a loop.

Usually there's no message.
Thanks very much for all of your help.
PS: To put things in perspective re hardware, this new machine has a 2 TB SSD and a 2 TB hard drive.
I remember getting my 2nd or 3rd Dell computer back in the 90s. The specs were a BIG hard drive, 1.2 GB! When it arrived, I was delighted to find a free 'upgrade': the drive was 1.4 GB -- an extra 200 MB. A REALLY BIG DEAL THEN!
