Preview hover on file name instead of icon

Hovering over icons for preview often interferes with clicking on icons to select files. The preview window gets in the way of my mouse click, so the file is not selected. Years of muscle memory forces me to avoid clicking on file names to select files because doing so often causes the name I clicked on to go into "rename" mode rather than selecting the file. I wish for an option to choose between hovering over icons or hovering over file names to show previews.
