Disable preview on icon hover when preview pane is open.
I know how to use shift and hover to switch the hover view on and off but its a bit cumbersome.

The preview pane shows the focused item but the hover preview shows the item hovered without the need to be focused, so these are clearly different things.

My exact point I only want one preview not two and the pane preview to take precedence

But being able to have two previews at the same time is a handy feature to compare files.

This is a very useful feature and I guess many users like it.
Just don't hover with the cursor over the icons and you have only one preview.

But I want to be able to hover over the icon ,but if the lager preview available via the preview pane is available there is no need to have both previews available.

I think you should just decide which preview you want to use (which for some of us can be both at the same time) and switch off the one you don't want.
Hampering a feature in order to match your workflow seems a bit selfish.

I did not seek to hamper a feature just sought help to see if was possible to configure the application to meet my needs.
Selfish I am not, a little dim may be.
