Hi,
I recently installed a new version of XY and therefore renamed the folder after updating it (I'm using the Portable version).
Since, Everything no longer works. I get an error message that it can't find the

Code: Select all

 Everything v0.9.5.xys
file that resides in the Scripts folder.

It's pretty obvious that it's because I renamed the folder but for some reason, I thought that Everything was also portable and would therefore not be affected by the renaming of the parent folder of XY?
Thanks for any tips, useful info.
Cheers,
Chumbo

What has this to do with the portability of Everything if it XY doesn't find the .xys file oO

Well, it's not finding it because of the name change of the parent folder of XY and I presumed that wasn't supposed to happen if Everything was truly integrated in a portable manner.
Because I searched for any reference to the original folder name in all the .ini files which is where I thought it might be referenced too but it seemed the parent folder was always referenced with the <XYPath> which I thought was in fact to preserve portability.

But hey, consider me completely ignorant which is pretty close to the truth and just enlighten me if you can on how to resolve this (other than by renaming it to it's original name of course )

Regardless of your specific problem
why do you make such strange pathnames ?
Using the portble version I would never use any path which includes the version number
as changing this invalidates any scripts which store some ini files inside it.
Stay with a simple path and the updates will replace the files in it.
If you want to backup versions you can simply save that one tree.
My portable xy for example is installed under C:\Tools\XYplorer\
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3374)
Portable XYplorer (actual version, including betas)
Everything 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.69

I see nothing strange about my path names. They have worked for me for years and for many portable apps. That's just the way I do it. How do you keep track of which version of an app you currently have?
Anyway, I'll follow your advice or I won't have a working Everything.

You can get the script to work in any path if you edit the Everything.ini file in your script dir
according to your actual pathes.
The name Everything.ini may be another one if your Everything.sys script name includes its version.

As I said in a previous post, I had in fact searched for the path in the .ini files and found nothing.

? The error message isn't triggered by the script, it's triggered trying to execute it. So post the way how you do it and the exact call for it...

I use a keyboard shortcut, Shift+F.

So you should know where you assigned that shortcut and be able to change it :)
Look under Tools / Customize Keyboard Shortcuts

Portable XYplorer (actual version, including betas)

But...why is the shortcut the problem when I change the folder name? Seems odd.
Because now, just so I could use Everything, I've named XY's folder back to what it was before and it works again...with that same shortcut, so...? I'm puzzled.

There's nothing odd with that. Post how the script is called (button definition, user defined command, whatever)^^

I thought I just did? As I said, I use a keyboard shortcut. Not sure what you're asking me otherwise?
EDIT: Ok...got it, the path is the old one, I see that now. Well then I guess it is better to just name XY's parent folder just XYPlorer and maybe use a comment to keep track of the version.
