Network and Not Responding

Hello.. I have an issue where XY gets "Not Responding" when I click on a network tab for a location that does not exist at the moment.
When I work away from the network I may have a bunch of network location tabs.. like \\servername\sharename\folder\folder.
This causes me to have to end process on XY as the Not Responding never goes away.
I do not have this issue when I am on the network or have my VPN running. thus, the network drive is available.
I've tried the various network checkbox and settings probably every which way and still have issues.
Is there something I am missing to resolve this issue specifically?
a hidden setting that I may have overlooked from reading in these forums?
update.. when I start some of the tabs are "XYplorer was closed with this tab pointing to a network location". seems ok.. but if I navigate to one of those.. its game over (Not Responding) until I end the XY process.
