can an option be added to: Tools --> Configuration --> General --> Tree and List --> Items in Tree and List
to hide CD / DVD drives like there is for floppy drives?

Well, at first it appeared a bit like bloat to me, but thinking about it, CDs are now what Floppies have been 20 years ago, right? Pretty obsolete! So, yes, there should be a way to hide those drives. I did not use mine in at least 5 years I think.

I rip newly bought CD's, no streaming for me, I like to own what I buy, and frequently make backups of important files on DVD-RAM, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

No, your definitely not the only one - completely agree on the buying CD's one.
As it is just an option to hide them, we will still find our CD/DVD drives when needed, though for my next laptop I might have to find an external one...
