Set Different Folder View for Parent Folder

Post by TestMeister » 21 May 2020 19:35

I have a folder structure as follows

Pictures
\Topic 1
\Topic 2

I would like to set a Folder View of "Details" for Pictures and "Thumbnails" for the subfolders that contain the bitmaps

I have not been able to do this after trying a variety of ways to apply FF including below
-Setting the FV for Pictures to Thumbnails with the option to include subfolders
-Then, removing the option for subfolders and resetting Pictures to Details
-This also sets the subfolders back to Details

Is it possible to have FF set a parent view different from the child views?

In one definition? Nope

You could define two, one for the root and one for all other subfolders of it via a wildcard <root folder>\*\

Sure you can have the subfolders as a thumbnail view or whatever you want and the parent as a detail or list view or whatever you want. For example I have a parent folder called "PDFs and Books" in a List view and all the subs in a thumbnail view. The subs get defined with an * so I would have what's shown below in the Edit Folder View dialog . The parent folder could be the default folder or you could assign a specific or different folder view tor the parent, G:\PDFs and Books. highend beat me to the punch.

Thanks, using your instructions it is working, with just a small difference

(1) At the Parent
  • Set Views= Thumbnails #3
  • Select FV\Apply this FV Also to
    o
Folder Apply settings to = C:\Pictures\*
    o
    Include subfolders (yes)
Parent and Sub folders show Thumbnails #3

(2) At the Parent
  • Set Views= Details
  • FV\Save FV
Sub folders still show Thumbnails #3, Parent shows Details, which are the views I wanted
At (2) no FV options shown until I first saved the FV but then saw both levels had correct views so no further edit needed

Question-
With the option "Include subfolders" why is the global "*" needed?

The "*" is simply distinguishing the subs from the parent (i.e., you're solely defining the subs and NOT the parent. You don't actually need to define a separate FVS for the parent if you only want to use the default (if you have a default defined - it's used everywhere unless you have something else defined in FVS or via tabs). That's how I have a couple folders/subs setup. My MP3 sub folders (all the albums folders) have a FVS F:\MP3\*, but the parent MP3 has nothing defined - it's simply using my default - List view.

Then what does "include sub folders" do?

If you want parent and the child to be the same FVS you can include the children when you when you set the parent.

Isn't that handled by specifying the subfolders in the path?

ParentFolder + Include Subfolders = Parent and Subfolders use this FVS
ParentFolder/* = Only the Subfolders use this FVS

Sure I suppose there are plenty of ways of accomplishing the same thing (see Folder View Settings in the Help file), but in most cases if you simply want the folder view for the subs to match the parent, clicking "Include subs" is the way to go. RalphM explains it quite simply.
