it would be great if the preview could properly scale/display 16bit Tif files (integer as well as floats), right now, all I see white... guessing it scales 255 to white.

am I the only one with 16bit files?
maybe there is a way to make this work that I don't know about?

From your post, I guess that somehow you have to work with photos and not only generic pictures. So I recommend FastPictureViewer Codec Pack (Don the developer also uses and recommends it, e.g. here).
Not only does it provide reliable previewing of (presumably) all formats you’ll encounter, it will also give better access to much more EXIF metadata.

So, to answer your first question: no, you’re not the only one with 16bit tif files, I have quite a bunch of them, displaying just fine in XYplorer. Granted, the previews might be slower than usual if your tif files are huge (e.g. some ~80Mb 4700x3100 Sigma conversions preview in ~1.5 sec here, and some ~400Mb 20000x3000 panos can take 10 sec).
And the answer to your second question: IMHO, if you’re into photography (or need to manage photos), FastPictureViewer is a no-brainer.
There might be other ways, especially if you only have generic/specific needs (e.g. only tiff and "common" formats), but probably not as simple or reliable —I remember trying another picture codec a few years ago, free, but it was much less reliable. Ok, found it: it was SageThumb, you could give it a try.
And maybe there’s a new codec kid around the block, who knows!

thanks for the tip flux. I don't quite grasp how FastPictureViewer integrates with XYPlorer though? Is this 'codec pack' automatically provided across windows without any custom compatibility with other apps?
Too bad that for the money it doesn't support photoshop files or Apple's *.HEIF.

I confirm that Photoshop files are supported, and indeed it’s written pretty much everywhere on the FastPictureViewer codec pack page.

FastPictureViewer Codec Pack is system-wide, so it will work pretty much everywhere in Windows: in Windows Explorer, in XYplorer, etc. You don’t have to change anything in XYplorer for it to work.

Regarding the HEIF format (and its predominant *.heic extension), I’ve no problem here either —at least on Windows 10. For full support in XYplorer (although it’s not related to the codec pack per se), you have to add it to the list of previewed image formats (Configuration > Previewed Formats > Image Files).

16bit tif's now don't show all white anymore. I wish though there was a way to preview them with the histogram stretched to the limits, like IrfanView shows them. Right now, If I have a 16bit Tif and the highest value is 20000 of 2^16, then it looks quite dark... hm. Anyone any ideas?

Next beta will include that extension by default.
