Access WdMyCloud

XYplorer is the only tool that seems to be able to make contact with the WDMYCLOUD NAS that I have. I do not understand and wish someone could explain to me.
Here's the little bit that I do know. WIN 10 has decided that having the old-style network sharing system is not safe. So they disabled file sharing as I know it. File Exlporer will not allow me to see or connect to the MYCLOUD storage over my home network. I can force it to work by making a configuration change that allows SMB to operate. Win 10 disabled this function that was available in previous versions. But, some aficionados say this is dangerous and would allow system attacks. So we can only do this on a temporary basis.
Nevertheless, XYplorer still lets me connect to the NAS. I simply enter \\wdmycloud\ in the search window of XYplorer and it all works. How can this be, when Windows File Explorer will not allow me to connect?? Is this safe? I am totally confused. Any good explanations out there?
