I don't know too much about this, so pardon my ignorance if this is a dumb question!
I do have a few different photo software tools, including DXO Photolab, which are able to read the EXIF data from jpg, tif, dng, and rw2 files. Does that imply that the appropriate codecs necessary are already installed in my system...?
Even tough DXO Photolab can read the EXIF data from all these file types, the search tools it provides are very rudimentary. I was hoping to expand my search capabilities with the XYPlorer scripting.

No, as long as Windows Explorer doesn't show them, the software you use has specific support for these file type inbuilt.
