How to make XY see custom folder icons?

Post by Lyon1 » 14 Jun 2019 21:59

Hi, I've changed my folder icon in Windows 10 - all folders - to a custom one, but XY will not display it, no matter what settings or view I use. Windows Explorer sees them fine. I've used this method - https://winaero.com/blog/change-folder-icon-windows-10/

Is it possible to make XY see the new icons, like Explorer does? In all views, including Touchscreen mode.

Also, please consider
- setting a custom icon for folders/files through XY (if the previous ain't possible)
- making the scroll bars thinner, at least 50% of the current size
- being able to open zip, rar, maybe 7z files natively, like FreeCommander does - use the files just like folders.
Thx for a great app.

Any possibility for an answer on this? At least the custom icon issue?

Sorry for the late reply.

Custom folder icons should certainly work. Ensure that this is unticked:
Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | Use generic icons for super-fast browsing

Thanks for the answer.
Nothing seems to work, no matter the options.
Please consider an option to let us replace standard icons, like folders.
Thanks.

It works here. When you define a custom folder icon in that way a file called "desktop.ini" is created in the folder. This file contains the reference to the icon. See the screenshot. As you see the folder has the desired icon.

I understand, but I was asking about changing the default icon for folders. In this way, XY will not see the change, and still displays the default yellow folder.
Win Explorer and other apps see the change. It's just XY that doesn't.
Again, not changing the icon for one single folder, but changing the default icon for all folders.

I think you might have used the wrong link in your original post which confused the issue, maybe you meant to use this instead, anyway that is a non-standard windows hack, so it's not surprising that XY doesn't read those registry entries. What you want to do is possible in XY via CFI though, just make sure this is still in its default enabled state:

Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | Enable custom file icons

and then open Tools | Custom File Icons and create an entry like the one shown in example #3 on this page: https://www.xyplorer.com/release_12.40.php#CFI which would be something like this: *\>c:\icons\folder.ico (ie. don't include the square brackets notes, and change the path to the icon to match the same one you set in the registry)

PS: Scrollbars width can be reduced OS wide like this if of any interest: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/798 ... -10-a.html

@Don: If you read this, the CFI shortcut key could do with updating on that page from Ctrl+I to the new Shift+Alt+F9

Thanks for the clarification, Jupe.

I'd assume that hack would work also for 32-bit apps if it is applied to the appropriate key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons
instead of or additional to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons

Ah yes, will update that CFI shortcut key.

Thanks a lot for the clarification.
I don't understand how to assign the new icon through the example here https://www.xyplorer.com/release_12.40.php#CFI

The example just seems to point to the icon I want, but how do I make XY use it for folders? Please consider making it easier to assign icons to specific items.

Ok, got it. It took a while to understand the commands.
Please consider making it more accessible. Thanks a lot.

It's two steps in the menu bar: Tools > Customize File Icons...
Plus there's an info button on the opened dialog that shows examples for multiple use cases.
More accessible how?

It's not obvious at first on how exactly to choose the specific icon you want to change.
More accessible would be a pop-up with file types, generic folder, drive etc. to easily change what we want.
But this is also good enough, thanks.
