Visual filters - an alternative

We have visual filters to find quickly a file or set of files, but are there other alternatives like writing the first letters of the name and XYPlorer goes to the first item with that sequence?

Yes, this works. Didn't you try?

You have to type fast!

The problem is that I have to be very quick writing the letters.

I also have this problem on occasion, as I'm a slow typist these days...maybe a tweak that specify some sort of millisecond timing to define it might be a way to handle this?

This is an alternative Total Commander (and other file managers) use:

Code: Select all

Dialog box: Quick search for file name

By pressing CTRL+ALT+Letter there appears a small dialog box below the active file window, allowing quick search for file names. As soon as the dialog box has appeared, you can release CTRL+ALT and enter further letters directly. The cursor jumps to the next file name starting with the letters you typed. By pressing cursor down or cursor up, you can jump to the next or previous match. You can close the box by pressing ESC. The box is automatically closed when you start another action.
I find it very usefully, particularly the Up/Down arrows.

I believe a "quick find/filter" box is planned no?

I currently re-evaluate what's coming next, and what then. I'll probably do some stuff that's (a) very popular, and (b) very easy to understand for eveybody. So it will not be scripting.

It looks like it will be:
(2) undo
(3) search results caching
(4) per-folder views

Oh, yes, and
(1) X-mas!

:D

Yes, you need a much deserved break. and leave the coding to Santa until X-mas.

BTW: i thought you normally have X-mas discounts on license? or was it only last year?

Yes, I did it 2 times I think. But now the licenses are so cheap, there is no space for discounts. To the opposite, after the afore mentioned features are added prices are likely to go up. XY is worth more than is costs right now.

That's for sure!

The cost for a lifetime license is about where the single version cycle price should be.

Is that a comment of an already hooked XY-user or are you still unsure about your future WE replacement as you were a couple days ago?

 Well, I guess it's a shame my XY-dreams aren't so easy to do or very easy to be understood by everybody, cause I sure am waiting for that scripting... 2008 shall be the year of scripting!
