If I assign a label color to a folder, I would like the option of having that color appear in the tree / mini tree not just in the list.

Yes, please, add this. This would be nice to have specially if you work with lots of folders and consistently use the tag feature.

I hope this can be added to the next major version of XY wihout taking too much work.

No, it would slow down the tree too much.
