Please see the screenshot below. I believe, in previous versions of XYplorer, that the tabs and "new tab" control in each pane would exist inside a frame where the user could scroll back and forth across the tabs, and the "new tab" control would always remain on-screen.

In the current version, as you can see, the tabs simply continue to extend to the right (beyond the right edge of the frame) and the "new tab" control disappears, and there is no obvious way to navigate over to the tabs that have disappeared to the right. Is there a way to force XYplorer to show the tab navigation controls, and to display the "new tab" controls for each pane as expected?

While I think this is a bug (and the disappearing "+"-sign for a new tab should not happen if there are too many tabs),
did you notice that the drop-down button for all tabs on that pane automatically moved from the right side to the left?
Additionally you can hover with the mouse over a tab and use the mouse wheel to scroll through all of them...

Yes, I was aware of both of those features (the dropdown moving to the left; and the scroll-wheel navigation). I'm just used to the interface remaining somewhat structured such that the controls were always visible at the edges of the panes, and I don't prefer for the tabs to simply slip off the edges as they do now.

After thinking about it for awhile: I do really like the dropdown on the left. Here's what I think I would like:

• Keep the tabs dropdown list that moves to the left when the tab row gets full;
• Ensure that the + (new tab) button remains on the right side of each pane at all times and doesn't slide off the right;
• For the tab scrolling via mouse wheel, change it so that the tabs are scrolled left/right smoothly, but not so that each individual tab gets selected as the scrolling occurs. (Right now I use a lot of network locations, which makes the mouse-wheel scrolling very slow as each tab is selected and loads with network latency).
• Optionally allow the user to reinstate the left-right tab scroll buttons on the right side of the pane.

This would make me happy with the tab controls.

I would not say that's a bug. If there is no space to even see that button, why would you create even more tabs?

Well, okay, as an improvement why not simply move that "New Tab" button also to the left?

My thought is that, in many interfaces, the "+new" control is to the right of the iterative items being added to. Oftentimes, the new item is appended on the right (for example, a new tab might appear on the right), so having to move the mouse all the way to the left, then click the button, then move the mouse all the way back over to the right, is less intuitive than having the "+new" button on the right.

Another thought is that the tab scrolling mechanism is janky for those using network locations, and I would enjoy if it were smoother.

Plus, it makes no sense to have a selected tab not visible on the tab bar (like it is possible today). IMO, the selected tab should always be visible on the tab bar.

If we go this way, this will be breaking change though as the mouse wheel won't be used to change the selected tab anymore. I never use the mouse wheel to change the selected tab, but maybe some do?

See the difference between XYplorer and Firefox for instance:

On XYplorer, the selected tab is never visible (on the tab bar) if it is located on the right of the last visible tab:


On Firefox, the selected tab is made visible as soon as you change the selected tab (via new tab or Ctrl+Tab):

"This way" = what proposes @rnssi (and I agree with it) = when scrolling when hovering the tab bar, do not change the selected tab
(like it is today), but scroll the tab bar left/right.

Okay, got it. This would be a complex change/addition. Currently XYplorer does not support this kind of tab scrolling at all. I'll think about it.

Note that there are keyboard commands for non-browsing tab selection:

Cycle Tabs Backward, Delay Browsing	Ctrl+PageUp
Cycle Tabs Forward, Delay Browsing	Ctrl+PageDown

Next beta the New Tab button will flip to the left when space is scarce.
