This doesn't happen with fresh;
I don't think I changed any settings recently.
XY is acting like the ctrl button is down on a left click - which ofc is an enormous pain for not deselecting all by clicking white space, etc.
I disabled any startup item that might affect XY. But then, if it were an outside program, it would likely affect fresh; as well.

Any ideas what might be causing this? It only happens in XY.

(I guess I did up the number of folders that would have the size/count cached awhile ago, but it was working fine.)

And yes, the computer recently underwent an exorcism, so no, it isn't possessed by demons.

Could it have anything to do with that AHK script you just posted?, maybe that is active holding the RCtrl down and so when you run fresh; it works because the script is already active in the first window?

I'm only guessing though, but I would make sure no AHK scripts are running in the BG as my first troubleshooting step, if you haven't already.

Nope. That's been running forever. Besides, I disabled it just in case because it affects XY only.

Apparently, it had something to do with the picture viewer (etc.) XNViewMP (32-bit) which I was giving a tryout in the open with menu. After deleting it with Revo Uninstaller - blasted thing works again. Go figure. (I also tried resetting the folder size caching to default, but it didn't seem to affect it, though I didn't try it for very long.)

Sometimes I really hate computers - though I love XY!

Suppose I'll leave this thread here in case it happens to anyone else.

Does anyone have a suggestion on the max reasonable setting (I'd like it as large as possible without using up too much memory or whatever) to set the number of folders cached?

FYI if you weren't aware already the default is internally limited to 10,000, personally I'd just leave that.

Thanks for reminding me of the number. I'll try doubling it first and putting a few exclusions and see if it makes trouble, then sneak it up again. If I cached every folder that's ever accessed by XY, I've got something like a quarter of a million according to "Everything", lol.

You wouldn't, perchance, mind reminding me of the syntax for exclusions, would you? I assume it's paths in quotes separated by semicolons?

And what would be the best way to exclude a network share from a mapped drive? Just the letter?

Used a USB utility from Nirsoft that shows when something was plugged in and the drivers installed. Apparently, a family member plugged in an off-brand mouse into my computer recently. Once I uninstalled the USB driver with the utility (I don't usually use a mouse, and if I do, it's Bluetooth), the problem finally stopped. The other things I thought related were simply victims of it being an intermittent problem. Big Cache - OK. Incomprehensible-seeming relation to a photo program - ridiculous. I checked the utility almost on a whim, just to make sure, and yep, there it was.

All hail to Nirsoft. (Sometimes it's astonishing to me the amount of random computer knowledge required to just keep a Windows computer functioning normally. Sometimes it makes Arch Linux look tempting - at least locating the problems would probably be better documented, plus source code.)

Still don't know why fresh; worked OK. *sigh*
