Selection Rectangle + Modifier isn't Consistent

In Explorer you can use the selection rectangle to select a set of files, release the mouse button, and then add to that selection by initiating the selection rectangle with a modifier key pressed (Shift or Ctrl). Which works in any of the views.
In XY it is only working correctly when using a Details view and only with the Ctrl modifier.
Is there a setting somewhere that controls this or is it just not implemented/possible with the current controls?
EDIT: It would also be nice if the rectangle itself could better mimic Explorer's. That nice looking transparent box instead of just the border.

So does this work correctly for everyone else and I'm the only one with the problem?
Or are you all just being shy as it's not something that affects you?

No, it's not supported. But selection by mouse *click* does support all the additional keys.

Is it something that could become supported with time?
Ctrl+Shift+Clicking isn't bad, but I find Click+Dragging to be more efficient.

It certainly should! But I try to honour priorities...
PS: I should add that adding this would take some time! It's not trivial...
