Check for selecting files ?

First what is that called whereas you can apply a checkmark beside a file to select it ?
With that in mind is it possible to apply this feature as a category ? Finally is it possible to color checked files ?

Menu - Tools - Customize List - Checkbox Selection?
With that in mind is it possible to apply this feature as a category ?

Menu - Favorites - Labels - Select one?

Checkbox selection is by default to the left of the file name. I'd like it as a column instead, if that is possible; also instead of strictly check marks the option of check mark, solid square or any other visual toggle feature ?
Depending on the type of toggled feature, as in; check mark, solid square etc the file gets colored.
