I am looking for a script that will scan the filename of a movie, pull the poster image from IMDb, and then embed that image as the file's thumbnail.

Can this even be done solely through scripting?

Nope

Embedding thumbnails into videos isn't a trivial task and I don't know any software that allows it
to do (for free) for all major video codecs via command line parameters...
