[Bug] a few thumbnail issues + Vista audio preview

So I encountered a few bugs, and thought best to report them (though I don't think all of the vista audio problem is a bug as such). Let's start with the thumbnails:

I use the thumbnail view quite frequently, but for some reason I didn't discover this problem until recently. The problem is that if you are viewing the images in a folder using the thumb view and then save a new image file in said folder, it will only be displayed as a black square and no thumbnail gets created for it.
I've then tried to change back to details view and to thumbnails again but it doesn't change anything. Restarting Xyplorer doesn't help either. The only way to get it to create the thumbnails for these files is to refesh them all.

In addition, several times that this has happened, the thumbnail cache for the already "thumbed" in this folder suddently also gets corrupted, and a whole buch of them are now also black. When this happens, the only way I've been able to solve it is by manually deleting the thumbnail cache and re-generating it.

How to replicate problem (the first part of it anway) with a 100% success rate:
Added: Enable thumbnail caching.
• Open a folder with some images, and set Xyplorer to thumbnail view.
• Drop a image from outside Xyplorer (e.g. using Windows Explorer) into the folder. You will now notice that it is simply represented with a black square.
• You can also use your browser and just save a image into the folder, and this will give you the same result...so I doubt it's related to DnD.

Please note that this is on Vista 32bit, so I am not sure if the same thing will happen on XP.

----

Now for the audio problems with Xyplorer on Vista. I guess I could begin with the part that I haven't managed to work around; volume control on the preview panel. This just doesn't work on Vista as you probably know (it doesn't do anything). Any chance of getting it fixed?

The more serious problem I am having with Xyplorer, Vista and audio isn't directly related to the audio, but more to the parsing of MP3 files. I am assuming you are just using DirectShow to do this? If so, the mp3 preview should play all files that works in WMP using said interface, correct? Well, it really doesn't.

Some files works just fine, but most of my music collection will not play at all. Xyplorer will just complain that it can't render the file. This doesn't surprise me all that much, as the default parser in XP and Vista isn't all that advanced when it comes to handling VBR files with ID3v2.3+ tags.

The way to get it working in WMP (and other DS based players) have usually been to install the DS-MP3 source filter, and it does work very well everywhere outside of Xyplorer. The problem is that after installing that, you get one step further in that XY will now try to render the file but locks up while doing so. No error messages is displayed, and the only way to get it working again is to kill it with the task manager.

I did mention earlier in this post that I had been able to work around this, and I did so by installing this MP3 Parser DS filter. The problem with installing this is that you can no longer stream MP3's from the web. Well, I solved that as well by installing the DC-Bass Source filter *and* the MP3 Parser DS filter, then making sure to drop the filter merit of the MP3 parser down to 00400000, while keeping DC-Bass above that (I'm using 00600000).

Why this works? Because it would seem that Xyplorer never even tries to use DC-Bass, but does work with the MP3 Parser filter. DC-Bass does take care of every other DirectShow player though, so now I can enjoy *both* streaming audio and Xyplorer audio previews.

What makes me metion this here, seeing as I've worked around it? Well, I'm mostly wondering why Xyplorer doesn't handle DirectShow the way others do. It clearly sees the DS-MP3 Source Filter, even if it crashes while trying to load the MP3 files, so something must be wrong somewhere in the chain.

...Ok, so my post got a bit to long, and reading over it now I'm not even sure if I was able to explain myself properly  If you have any questions about this or need more details, just let me know and I'll be right on it :)

EDIT: Yay for white-space :P

Update: The problems with thumbnails only happens when thumbnail caching is enabled. If I disable that, everything works fine. It's not a solution though, as it would make Xyplorer painfully slow to use when working on large image collections.

Can't test the audio preview here at work, but I cannot replicate the thumbnail bug on XP SP2, so it's probably a new wonderful feature in Vista. :P

I remember the audio working just fine on XP (even with DS-MP3), so that does have something to do with changes done in Vista as well.

FWIW: The thumbnails work just fine on my W2K system using the procedure as desribed.

A long post isn't usually a problem, but lack of spacing/paragraphs can be! :P
I'd suggest a quick edit to add some spacing every 4-6 sentences or so, as big blob of texts like that are hard to follow sometimes...just my $.02.

Black thumbs... I have seen this under XP as well. It's on my list.

Your screenshot: the tree has a border, the list has not! How's that possible??

Yeah, about that...I just don't know how why, but I must say that I rather like the borderless list. I take it that wasn't supposed to happen?

Back to the thumbs though, do you have any ideas as to what's causing the problem? Anything I can do on my end to solve this until the bug(?) is fixed?

EDIT: I would also like to ask if you have any idea why Xyplorer displays transparent PNG's with a black background? Is that possibly related to the problems I'm having with the thumbnails?

borderless list: no, not supposed to happen! Do others have this too???

what's causing black thumbs: a combination of scrolling and clicking the list before the thumbs are all done -- at least sometimes... there are other factors... I'm still checking...

black background: it's a GDI bug, google "GdipCreateHBITMAPFromBitmap black"... It can be worked around obviously since Explorer does not have the problem, but I did not find the way yet...

Hmm, I tried hard to be nasty ... but I just could not generate any problem! Thumbs work great here!

The problem with it corrupting a whole bunch of already existing thumbnails is something I can not reliably reproduce, unlike the problem with new images turning up black as described in my original post. The only thing that I can say for sure, is that when this happens it appears to always be in combination with the problem saving new images in a folder when already viewing said folder in thumbnail view. I also don't think I've ever seen it happen with a folder with just a few images. It's much more frequent when in folders containing a whole bunch of them...

Fixed the black thumbs bug! :D Yeah!

You did...already?! Fantastic work, as always of course Image Never imagined this would be fixed in a day!

I've now tested it over and over again trying to break it, but it appears to be rock solid. Will start another topic on the audio thingy as requested :)

Just wanted to add that it still corrupts existing thumbnail images from time to time, even if the new images shows up as they should...but now I think I am able so replicate the conditions most of the time, so it would be interesting to hear if you are able to do the same :)

Step 1:
Open a folder with a somewhat large number of images. I was able to replicate the issue quite consistently with around 4-500+ large images and above.

Step 2:
Have the above folder open in thumbnail mode, and sorted by filename, while saving a new image there from an external source. For my tests, I used my browser to download the Xyplorer boxshot that you're using in this forums header.

Step 3:
Right-click in the file list and choose to sort by the modified date. If you now try scrolling down a bit in the list, a large number of the thumbnails should now be corrupted. I have had it corrupt the thumbs without having to resort as well, but changing the sort order seems to always mess up the cache.

Notes:
• Most of my images have a height between 800-1600px, and a width from 1280-2560px. but it happens in folders with a large number of smaller images as well. I don't know if you remember when we were exchanging a few mails regarding the GIF thumbnail problems (crashes) and I sent you a ZIP archive with a lot of tiles? If you still have that one, you can use it to test with as I could reproduce it with that exact folder as well.
• I use somewhat large thumbnails, with the dimensions: 168x105px
• I am experiencing the same on both Vista and XP.

EDIT: In case you have deleted the archive with the tiles, you can still download it from the link I sent you.

Yep, and I also was able to fix it. :)

It's fixed...already?! Image Looking forward to testing out the next version then!

Any details on what was causing the problem?
