Just autodownloaded v18.40.01. Customize : Toolbar : Options does not show Show Button Captions. What is wrong?

I did not want to throw that brand-new feature into a mere maintenance release without docs and translation. Next beta will have it again.

Your position is understandable. The said, however, the Beta Release Notes v18.40.0001 - 2017-09-21 16:14 leads folk to believe it would be there.

For those "impatient Petes" who can't wait, in Configuration File go to: ToolbarCaptions=0 and change to 1.

Note: this always involves an element of risk. If timid wait until it is part of program interface.

Yes, but it's nevertheless a beta version which has a usual average lifetime of 12-24h. I don't see a real problem there.

After both meditation and cerebration you have forced me to agree. Beta means Beta and is not a "Gold Release to Manufacturing" edition.

Perhaps the time has come to quit following "Not Yet Ready For Prime Time" forum.

Not sure how you come to that conclusion.

The reason for that 0100 release was a couple of bug fixes. No point to add a new major feature that has no GUI translation and no Help entries yet.

From my POV the feature is totally finished. Nothing to do here in the pipeline.
