I'm looking to add a small 1,2,3,4 prefix before the file name of a file without it part of the file name, but is saved with the file within XY. For example, via a context menu or keyboard short-cut, I choose 1 if run again, it replaces 1 with 2 if run again, it replaces 2 with three and you get what happens last.

A prefix that is NOT part of the file name but is saved with the file within XY.
Are you talking about saving that prefix e.g. as a tag and only XY displays it by reading
that tag -> In other words, this could only be displayed in a custom column?

I'm not a fan of custom columns, therefore is there another method ?

I suppose I was hoping for another method as a way to add numbers before file names.
