I may be doing something incorrectly, but I do not see generic icons after I have selected it under advanced options. I did close out XYplorer and reopen to see if that would work, but that too did not appear to work. Any suggestions?

Use generic icons for super-fast browsing
Generic icons are determined by the extension (resp. type) of a file only, and not by its specific contents. Meaning no file access are required to determined the icon to use, thus making them much faster to load, especially in network locations.
Note that only the following file types can have specific icons (which typically but not necessarily are embedded icons), so only files of these types will show different icons when you enable the use of generic icons: folders and *.exe *.lnk *.ico *.icl *.cur *.ani *.htm(l) *.url

But only in network locations
Since the effects will be most notable in network locations, this option allows you to confine the use of generic icons to network locations only.

Thanks for the link. Then it works differently than other file managers generic icons. Unfortunately, the handful of *.exe *.lnk *.ico *.icl *.cur *.ani *.htm(l) *.url that it does or does not in the case of *html (on my computer that is unchanged - firefox icon still shows) doesn't really provide a boost in typical day-to-day use. Not knocking the program, just this feature.

How do other file managers do it then?

Doesn't really provide a boost: depends on your hardware. With today's CPUs, HDs and big RAM these things are less and less notable. But you will (will?... back to the future ) note it on older machines, especially with slow HDs. And, of course, in a network setting.

Can I customise these icons to ones I want to use? If not, can you add this please? (Then I can get rid of those "horrid" vista folder icons)

Other file managers that have this feature use a single generic icon for all files regardless of type, folder icons remain the same. and yes it is a much faster rendering of the directory if you have a lot of files in your directories.

my assumption is if it sees a non-folder item, it may simply use a generic icon. But that is only a guess on my part.

Okay, this is a very generic approach: folder versus non-folder. I could add this easily but I don't think it's necessary. XY is fast enough.

no worries, I like XYplorer, don't get me wrong, I was merely confused when I saw non-generic icons still showing after selecting the option to show generic icons, thats all.

Luke, how would you propose this would work? Just wondering...

It's my understanding that the generic icons presently used by XY are stored within XY's .EXE...true? If so, how would one keep the speed of not having to fetch a file or files to load the replacement icon(s)? Maybe have at least a tweak INI to define the location(s) of substitute icon(s) that would be loaded at XY startup or restart?

No, generic icons are stored and managed by the OS. If you want a different folder icon, ask your OS.
Otherwise the way you describe is correct: to substitute the OS icon(s) XY would have to load ICO files at startup. Not my plan.

I think the term "generic icons" is correct for what's happening here. It's the other apps that use it wrongly.
