2 Feature Requests

First, I have to say thank you for writing such an awesome piece of software. I can explain how much XYplorer has improved my use and speed of using Windows.

A couple of "wishes" if you will. First, a minor UI request to add a close icon (and action of course) to the tabs. Although I use ctrl+w most of the time to close my tabs, having this little UI tidbit would provide UI continuity with FireFox (and IE 7) for XYplorer users.

My other request is when trying to access a remote UNC share (or server) on a network (i.e. \\server1\c$) that requires a login, XYplorer simply displays a prompt "Couldn't find location: \\server1\c$". Windows Explorer throws up the login prompt when navigating to the same share. Reading through the bugs forum I noticed you guys are working on this but I figured I would throw this in here and this is the only item that really causes me pain right now as I have to access many network servers across multiple domains on a day-to-day basis.

Thanks for listening and keep up the awesome work!
Mike

Hi Mike, welcome to the club!

close icon: okay, continuity is indeed a valuable point... I put it on my list.

login prompt: I'd add this right now if I knew how! I offer a free license for a hint! :)

Thanks! If you feel like talking about it, there's always review work to be done! :) Like on CNET, or Snapfiles, or Softpedia...

this under "new options" on your list, right? Cause I hate those icons and don't want one. Useless waste of pixels IMO, I just middle click to close anyways...

Well, I dont know if this is a hint, but if I type the passworded share into IE i get the same login prompt like when I am clicking a share in WE nethood.

Update: I found an alternate solution:

1. I made a shortcut to the passworded share.
2. Dragged this to IE (which i have in my catalog) and WOW!! it prompts for password. :D.
I agree its not a neat way, because you have to close IE after this and then navigate with XY.

For now this trick works. I will try with more shares.

Excellent point, adding the icon/functionality such as this should be an option that can be toggled by the user rather than hardcoded for everyone. I as user would fall into your camp as I prefer to use keyboard shortcuts but, I know other users that live and die by using their mouse and I would love to see XYplorer become more mainstream with Windows users. I have recommended this program to all of my employees, friends and business associates!

Managing UI and functionality is an art as much as it is a skill.

If you can provide me with some hyperlinks, I would happy to write some reviews!

Another vote for NOT having xlose icons on tabs. However, if you are going to add it, give it three options:
1. Off
2. Just on active tab
3. On all tabs

I did find a thread where this "X" close tab was discussed before:
http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=1088
Based on that, plus all the various options that currently exist to do the function, I'd have to agree with Luke's idea as listed.

And having the "X" on only the active tab would/could/might further enhance the ability to quickly spot which one is active.

Also, given that I'm using a touchpad, the existing middle-click is unavailable to me, so I use Cntl-W most times.

Could you really imagine that I hardcode this?  Not me, after fighting for every pixel since years!

I agree with all three! :)

BTW, I think the tabs' context menu could be slightly improved (adapted to common de facto standards) by moving the Close Tab command to the bottom of the menu. So the bottom of the menu would look like this:

...
---------------------
Set Visual Filter...
etc.
---------------------
Close all other unlocked tabs
Close all other tabs...
Close tab

Any objections?

Yes, "Close" towards the end sounds good.
