I noticed with version 17.40, the installation file is not sign. Publisher: Unknown is what pops up during installation. Although the checksum is correct for the file download. Is this an oversight or as intended?

You are probably talking about a beta release. XYplorer betas are usually unsigned to streamline the release process.
