XYplorer Beta Club

Out of the box, XYplorer can preview .MP3 files. I installed a program (KMPlayer) which somehow changed the XYplorer configuration to associate itself with .MP3 files. I have since uninstalled that program, but XYplorer still tries to open .MP3 files with it. How can I modify the configuration to revert this association back to the native XYplorer player?

Welcome to the forum.

Filetype associations are handled in the registry. XYplorer doesn't register .mp3 as a filetype to open with.
Are you sure that you aren't using a PAF (portable file association) in XYplorer?

Get http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html for your OS bitness (x64/x86)
Extract it, execute it, wait until it's finished.
Scroll down to ".mp3" (left column)
Click on that column

Show a screenshot of the full window (the interesting part is the lower pane, it show which actions for that filetype are registered with which program)...

Thanks for your quick reply, highend. Attached is a snapshot of what the Nirsoft utility finds. Nothing appeared in the lower pane when I clicked on the ".mp3" entry. What do I do now?

You could go to the control panel, "Programs", "Make a file type always open in a specific program"
click on ".mp3" and on the upper right button "Change program..."

Select "Windows Media Player" and click OK

Thanks again, highend. Either I didn't understand your answer, or I didn't make my problem clear. I know how to associate filetypes with programs like the Windows Media Player. (Actually, VLC is my favorite media player at the moment.) But if I do that, then XYplorer will offer to open that program when I click on Preview, which will add a step I don't need to the interface.

I know that XYplorer can preview .MP3 files all by itself without using any external utility. So what I need to do is to revert XYplorer's file association for .MP3 to its own internal built-in media player. Since there's no way to choose XYplayer in any file associations dialog box, I need to do it in XYplorer's "Tools/Configuration..." panel and I just don't see how. I haven't figured out how to disassociate .MP3 files from an external player and let them revert to what you get out-of-the-box. Can you enlighten me a bit here? I'd appreciate it a lot.

I tried what you described in a virtual machine. Install KMPlayer, uninstall it.
It left all filetype associations untouched (so they are still assigned to it).
But this doesn't affect the internal preview engine of XY for e.g. mp3s.

Which means: I show the preview pane (Ctrl + F11) and when I single left
click on an .mp3 file, the preview pane will show the windows media player
control and a click on the play buttons plays the file. No questions asked,
no try to open KMPlayer.

So, what exactly are you doing to preview an .mp3 file and which preview
do you use (floating, preview pane, F12 -Preview tab)?
