Just a simple left click on an empty space on the desktop?

Not configurable...

I cannot imagine how can you expect to click on empty space to launch a new window? I have never seen any program can do that. Or are you mentioning Tablet mode?

It's overkill, but you can kind of accomplish this with Listary (listary.com). Double-clicking on desktop (or in Explorer or file dialog white space) pops up a customizable menu on which you can put XY.

So, it should be a 3rd party software which monitor "click-on-desktop" and fire XY accordingly => It's not XY business anyway.

I had written a little AHK script that lets you double-middle-click on the desktop to open XYplorer, here: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11782

Which could be easily enhanced for normal double clicks (or any other combination) as well
