Is there a CURRENT LINK to a set of test icons and a simple text how to use or install that does not involve scripts etc?
Currently all icon information is scattered throughout the 16.4 hell files.

CFI = Custom File Icons

There is a big section of how to use them in the help file of XY. Tab - Index - Lookout for "Portable File Icons"

XY brings a bunch of internal icons, but these aren't exposed as .ico (or .png) files to the user...

So get any free icon pack from the internet and start to configure your CFIs / icons on the toolbar.

Regarding toolbar icons: Right click a button there and use Edit... in the context menu
It has an "Icon:" field where you can paste or browse to a suitable resource
That field supports XY variable names. E.g. I store my icons in "<path to xyplorer>\Data\Icons"
and use one like this in this field: <xyicons>\BeyondCompare.ico

To be clear, this isn't an option for the stock toolbar icons... Only your custom ones. Hopfully Don will allow us to customize "skin" packages for the built in toolbar some day. :)
