I updated to version 16.10 today, and was happy to report that I could now preview WordPerfect files. However, after doing that, I can't preview some other formats, such as .doc and .pdf. I can preview .jpg files. I can't tell you whether I was able to preview the problem files before previewing the WordPerfect files. XYplorer has twice "stopped working" since the upgrade.

Should I install one of the previous versions, and if so, which one?

Using on Windows 8.1, if that matters.

Can you preview these other formats with preview in Windows explorer (from Windows 7 or newer) ? What version of MS Office have you installed ? Preview 2.0 which is used in XYplorer 16.10 for first time can preview office formats such .doc very well, but MS Office must be installed. I have Office 2007 32 bit installed. When you can not preview .doc or other formats with preview in Windows explorer, then you can not preview these formats with preview 2.0 (XYplorer 16.10) too. It is my experience. Maybe your MS Office are older.

I have Office 2003 SP3, so it's old. In Windows Explorer (Windows 8.1), I don't get a preview of .doc files, but I do get a preview of .pdf.

About pdf preview in XYplorer 16.10:

I have PDF-XChange Viewer installed. PDF preview works for me very well.

Just install PDF-XChange Viewer or Sumatra PDF reader http://www.sumatrapdfreader.org/free-pdf-reader.html
Both are very capable PDF readers, Sumatra is even faster than XChange, but XChange has more features.
Sumatra is very good at handling large PDF files, search is multiple times faster than Adobe junk. PDF-XChange Viewer has great options for viewing multiple documents at once, side by side, in tabs, etc, helps to keep the taskbar clutter-free.

When you have to to use Adobe Acrobat too:

You have to make installed PDF-Xchange Viewer as the "d e f a u l t" PDF program. In Windows Explorer you always have the option to right click and "Open with Adobe Acrobat Pro". In XYplorer you can make a PFA to ...

Thanks for the pdf options. I've made note of them, but I think I'll reload XYplorer 16.0 since I believe I could preview most formats without difficulty in that version. I might have to double-check that, but I don't remember problems.

I also can't find a pattern to when XYplorer 16.1 will crash. I expect it's when the Preview window is active, but sometimes the crash will occur while I'm working in another program, and the crash notice pops up. I tried to find patterns, such as XYplorer attempting to preview any MS Office format file, but I can't confirm that.

What is your PDF program?

I use Adobe Reader for viewing, and Nuance PDF Converter Professional 8.1 to edit pdfs. I typically print to pdf with CutePDF.

Thank you. I've reverted to version 16.0 for the time being. I'll try the next version, or follow your instructions to tweak 16.10.

Please try the current beta version here from the forum. Should work better now.

When running the beta installer, I get this message:

I can't continue, and have some reluctance in trying to go beyond clicking "OK," which doesn't have an effect.

So, you don't trust me. Okay, you can't be too careful.

You will have to wait for the next official release then, and I need some other beta tester. So, who else is getting crashes?

Well, it's really more that I CAN'T proceed, and I don't even know what Windows SmartScreen is.

Ah, I see. Can't help, never heard of SmartScreen.
