Color labels disappearing

The drop-down selection for color label columns keeps getting 'lost' like so:

.
I can fix it by doing View→Caches→Refresh Icons, but it happens very often. I've tried binding #502 to a button, but that doesn't work for some reason. It says 'Icons refreshed' but doesn't fix the problem.
Is there a specific reason this happens? Maybe there's limit to the number of custom icons I can have (I have lots)?

It's a known issue - but no solution yet. I also keep getting it - very consistently across all OS.

I am worse off than you - because refreshing the icon cache does not work for me at all.
Do you always get the colors back when refreshing the icon cache?

Yes, doing so via the main menu restores the colors. But since I usually have the menu hidden, I've bound a button to do a quick save-restart instead, which also fixes the problem.

Yes, restarting also works for me - well, most of the time - but it's awkward, waiting for custom columns and thumbnails to be read in again.
I get this bug so often that I've stopped using color labels. With your help, maybe we can track it down to exact circumstances under which it happens?

My restart is almost instantaneous (probably because of ssd) so it's bearable. Not using color labels is not an option for me since I've come to rely way too much on them. I can't imagine how I functioned without them or why MS hasn't made it a native windows feature
Anyway, I have reduced the number of active custom icons to see it makes any difference...

Oh yes, tell me about it, it used to be the same here. But over so many months the frequent restarts have become really aggravating. It doesn't take long and the colors are gone again, and again and again.
I run XY portable, many of my host machines don't have SSD - my restarts often take a few seconds.
Keep me posted if you find out anything.
