Questions/problems around my renaming files work flow.

My problems stem mostly around renaming files. I often have to look at a document in the preview pane while renaming the file, at no time do I ever double click and open the file since the preview pane option is so powerful. Sometimes (but not always) I get an error that says "cannot rename the process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process". I double check and the file is not open anywhere else except preview. If anyone has any info on stopping this that would be helpful.
Arguably the biggest problem for me is that when renaming a file and I mess up and hit backspace it leaves the folder I am in completely ruining my work flow.
I often single left click a file and type in a new name identifying it and then hit tab to go to the next file. (edit: this is another problem I have - Sometimes hitting tab doesn't do that correctly).
Very, very often I mistype a filename and immediately hit backspace to fix the error. Sometimes it works and deletes while keeping the file name editable, but sometimes it throws me out of that folder and basically acts as a "back" button. Can anyone elucidate why this happens differently and what I can do to fix it?
Sorry for the long winded questions/problems. Thank you so much in advance.
