A Tip of the Hat...

to Don for this incredible tool that all of us rely on so much. :appl:

Offering words of appreciation came to mind today as I was browsing a very long directory of music tabs and chord charts saved as text or Word documents. I have maintained these for years and continue to add new ones but I have long forgotten everything the directory contains AND how I might have titled the documents. While aware of our excellent search function on the Info Panel, it takes a few keystrokes to bring it up and configure, and being exceedingly lazy, I tend to only use it when I have no clue where something might be or if I even have the item. As a result, in this music folder, I have been in the habit of sorting it various ways as I search for a document I think I might have.

I then thought it would be nice to have a simple search dialogue for the current folder, and realizing I have frequently found cool features in XY that I had previously been unaware of, I checked the Tool Bar options and immediately found the Quick Search feature that does exactly what I need: a search of the current folder and sub-folders.

Sadly, while not always the case in my experience, it is much appreciated the Don approaches his craft with continued dedication and quality.

Thanks Don

We all have those moments: learning the brilliance of XY, and getting hooked.
I thought it would be nice to have a simple search dialogue for the current folder...
More efficiently (if you usually keep the addressbar open), you can enter search patterns directly into the Address Bar. Simply put a ? (question mark) between location and pattern.

for example,
C:\WINDOWS\?*.log = find all LOGs in C:\WINDOWS\

?*.txt = Find all TXT files in current folder

C:\;D:\?*.ini /maxdepth=2 = find all ini files in C:\ and D:\, but search upto 2 subfolder levels.

read the "Address Bar" chapter in "Main Topics" of the help file.

Hi Testmeister,

Type Ahead Find is also worth a mention. Though it isn't always the tool of choice, it's the most easy and intuitive search approach for me.

Cheers,
