Idea: Hover Trigger aka MOBU

Tired of clicking? Here is and idea: A kind of hot spot near every file in the file list. That could be an extra icon in front of the normal icon, or you could declare the normal icon as hot spot. Further you declare a delay time (eg. 500 msecs) and an action. Now when you hover the hot spot (mouseover) and after the delay time has passed, the action is triggered, without any click.

Action could be:
- Pop a Blow Up (as if MDBU). (Additionally one could define some mouse gesture to close a Blow Up, so that would also work without a click.)
- Un/Select the file.
- Any of the existing commands.
- Run a user defined script (which could do almost everything as you know).

Silent operation... fascinating, isn't it?

How to fool proof? i.e: left my PC for luch, then someone nudge my mouse

I suggest holding down Ctrl+hover

Fool proof, that's the question.

So I'd think it usually should only bring something to view, as MDBU, or Properties, other info, or maybe some menu.
For more 'action' I would be afraid

So, Mouse Over Blow Up, here it comes?

I agree with the fool-proof concerns, but I'd leave the user problems to the user. If he knows he can't handle such a powerful feature then he better disable it altogether, instead of pushing for a crippled version. The entire concept here is no click, just hover, if you add a keyboard key then the whole idea is different.

I, personally, would add a toolbar button to quickly enable/disable it (maybe with an "Are you really sure?" warning), and a bunch of checkboxes in Config > Seat belts for the operations that could be performed with such feature:
-filesystem ops
-scripting
-launching
-and so on...

Nice idea.
But I know double or even triple clicks are often shorter than 500 ms.
However, control security is the top concern here. Just think, you rest your mouse on a random point for half a sec, and there's more than 1 in a (screenwidth*screenheight) chance that all current items get deleted.
But seriously, I believe it will have a much higher chance of accidental activations, so hover triggers should be restricted to mdbu mObu only. And maybe launching something.

Besides, ...

...Mouse gestures by itself sounds much more enticing. 8)

+1 for the idea.
+11 for the Marco's idea (a toggle button for that + a few seat belts) - wanted to suggest a toggle button myself before reading Marco's suggestion.

And finally...

Hey, Don, you know that I would like to have that also as an option on every control that can pop a menu list (or a list of tabs, or a list of paths, ...).

EDIT: For a tool button icon, maybe some kind of flying carpet or a surfboard would be nice.

Don't wanna be a killjoy, but I cast a strong vote for making it optional.
I like clicking, it keeps my finger from falling asleep on the mouse button, where it has to stay poised anyway, unless clicking becomes totally obsolete one day.

And I believe I'll prove myself fool enough to twart all fool-proof efforts.

+1 from the fool sitting in front of my keyboard. :)

I like it but don't understand why it should be a separate thing instead of part of Custom Columns?

+1 here as well, though I agree with others that the user should be able to shut it off or make it optional. I like the idea of a button maybe with some right click configurations.

I think it would be even better if it was something we could configure by folder location, maybe as part of FVS or tab. In this way we might be able to assign a script (great idea by the way) in one location and possibly a cid or MDBU in another location. Why force people to be in detail view as part of CC?

Well yes, detail view only -- that's the price you pay of having it in CC.

OK, thanks for now - I just wanted to bring it on the table. There is no hurry here. The next big thing will be, obviously, MTP support (= show USB devices and do something with the stuff on them). A dull and uninspiring task, but has to be done. :|

Ooh this is a neat idea! I had a similar idea like this a while before but it was more for thumbnail view rather than the general view like your idea. My idea was having a a translucent square outline that is shown in a corner of the thumbnail that does an action if you hover over it. Was thinking them as ActionSquare but too bad it's not general enough like your idea.

Haha. MTP support is definitely important so have fun with that. Don't forget Live Filter but then again, you need to close your windows on windy days! The wind keep shuffling the priorities all the time and also introducing crazy ideas!
