As of this date, Open Avira Antivirus configuration (double click icon in notification area - next to clock till win7.) Or left click select config.

In left panel select Real-time Protection

Extras is located in the toolbar at the top (even if it's grayed out) - click on it. It lists "Configuration" as an option or tells you press f8. That version of configuration has extra "expert" features.

A separate window will open. Click on PC Protection / Real-Time Protection / Scan / Exceptions
You can go from there. Note, listing processes may takes a long time.

Adding process exceptions so far seems to work like a champ. Life is do-able again. Why are there only 30 views??

I imagine many of the regulars have already dealt with the problems of antivirus slowdown.

This will hopefully be useful in the future for those users who search before posting or can be linked to for those that don't but mention they are using Avira.
