Catalog filters problem

Using version 5.50.004 on WinXP/ all updates.
If I have a category item set to a folder abc and a filter of abc| (i.e. remove all filters) and a locked tab (first tab) of abc|*.pdf and a second locked tab of abc, when I press Return on the category item abc|, the first tab gets chosen even though its filter (*.pdf) doesn't match the category item filter.
If I have a third unlocked tab up and press Return on the category item abc|, the third tab shows abc when the second tab could be used because it's already showing abc unfiltered. Now with the third tab showing abc unfiltered and unlocked I select another category item (xyz) that results in a fourth tab showing xyz. Now when I click on category abc| the fourth tab shows abc unfiltered when both the second and third tab are already showing abc unfiltered.
If I remove the pipe from the abc category item (so now it shows in the category pane with a folder icon beside it) and select that item, the first locked tab (abd|*.pdf) gets chosen even though its filter doesn't match and there are tabs already showing abc whose filter does match.
Now I set the filter on the abc category item to abc|*.txt. I have another category item xyz. With the fourth tab showing abc unlocked and unfiltered, pressing Return on the abc|*.txt category item shows abc|*.txt on the fourth tab. Now when I select xyz category item (or any folder in the Tree pane) the *.txt filter has become stuck to that tab (and other tabs eventually) and the *.pdf filter has disappeared from the first locked tab.
