I'm not sure if this has been requested before (I conducted a couple of searches and didn't find anything), but I think it would be pretty useful to have a find as you type feature similar to Firefox's. Basically this would come in handy when looking at directories where there are hundreds/thousands of files.

I know you can already type the first letter of a directory/file name and you will be taken to the first directory/file matching that letter, but I think it would be much more useful if you could just start typing in the name of the directory/file and it would match against the whole word that was typed. You could then use the find next/previous matches just like a search to move between different files that contain the typed in text.

Find as you type or type ahead find is already in XYplorer. I always use this handy feature myself. You are right i too did not find it in the search, but there is a mention about XY's type ahead find in wikipedia here.

The functionality is very discrete but it works exactly as i was thinking. Maybe I should change this to wanting some sort of visual indicator to show what I just typed. For example: show the search string in the Status Bar at the bottom of the XYplorer window as I type it.

You are right. An option to highlight the typed characters would be very handy. But hold on, have you tried ctrl+m?? it a selection feature in XY. press ctrl+m and type the file you are looking for. it will select all possibilities. Its more flexible than you think, you can use wild characters, regexp and what not. Just visit the XYwiki for more info on that feature. Alternatively, you can also use ctrl+j to display only the files you want. Tip: use ctrl+shft+j to toggle filtered/unfiltered view. Enjoy.
