If novagator is having the same issue I am then this is what he means:

When you right-click on a folder in XYplorer using the 64-bit Windows context menu, there is an entry in it to start Mp3Tag in the selected directory. However when you click on Mp3Tag, nothing happens--the context menu disappears but looking at Process Monitor & Process Explorer, the Mp3Tag program does not start at all.

The Mp3Tag context menu item works as expected in xplorer2 portable, Q-dir, and Windows Explorer.

XYplorer free 13.80.0100 portable & 14.00.100 installed
Mp3Tag 2.58
Windows 7 Pro x64

One solution would be creating a Catalog item, in Application: path to mp3tag.exe and in Action on click: Open selected List items with application. You could also create a toolbar button, On Left click: openwith"path to mp3tag.exe".
It's very useful when you are using XYplorer and Mp3tag in a portable configuration, just set it once and you are done.

I have had the same problem and found that unchecking "Show the 64-bit context menu" in the configuration dialog will allow mp3tag to load properly from the context menu in XYplorer.

The problem does not happen with Windows Explorer and one can still load mp3tag from the programs shortcut, so it is definitely a bug in XYplorer.

Looking at the mp3tag program directory, one finds two files named Mp3tagShell32.dll and Mp3tagShell64.dll. I would guess that enabling the 64-bit context menu in XYplorer causes a conflict as to which should be loaded.

Apologies for the 10-year-plus necro, but this topic is relevant to me and I found this thread useful. It does seem to be a niche intersection of software but perhaps someone else will find this information useful as well. Of course it would be lovely if it were possible to get the MP3Tag context menu item to work with XYplorer, but I have no idea how much work that would require.

XYPlorer 26.70.05
MP3Tag 3.28
Win10

I don't see a context menu item for "MP3Tag" when rightclicking items in XYplorer. In Configuration | Other | Shell Integration, "Show the 64-bit context menu" is unchecked. If I check that box, then I get the MP3Tag option, but using it there is no response, as described by user "EvilRoy".

User "xtabber" describes two dll files in the MP3Tag folder, but I only see the 64 bit version; this is expected as I'm using the 64 bit version of the application. This also probably explains why I don't see the context menu item at all in XYplorer.

The post by user "sinilill" got me close enough to where I want to go. Here are the steps necessary in XYPlorer for that to work (assumes MP3Tag is already installed).
  1. Click Window | Show Catalog (or Ctrl F8) to show the Catalog below the tree
  2. In a blank spot within the Catalog, right click and select "Add New Category..."
  3. Name your new category. I went with "MP3Tag"
  4. Now browse to your MP3Tag executable location, probably C:\Program Files\Mp3tag
  5. Select MP3tag.exe
  6. In the Catalog, right click your new Category and select "Insert as New Item(s) Here..." and then "Selected List Item(s)"
You should now have a new item in your catalog that shows the path to the MP3Tag executable.
Now select a music folder that you want to open in MP3Tag. Select the top directory that you want to work in, e.g. if you wanted to tag all your Metallica MP3s then you'd select "Metallica"; but if you just wanted to tag Master Of Puppets then you'd select the MoP folder.
Ctrl + Shift + Click the MP3tag catalog item, and it should open your selected folder in MP3tag. You can also right click the catalog item and select "Open Selected List Item(s)" if that works better for you.

The only drawback I've found to this method is that it does not clear the files you were previously working on. So if you've just finished up with Amon Tobin and now you want to work on Amorphis, it'll keep the Amon Tobin files in the main view. This may not be an issue if only a few files are retained, but it can get a bit messy. I've found two workarounds in MP3Tag:
  • Once you're done with a group, you can remove the files using Ctrl A to select all, then Delete to remove. This does not delete the files from your drive, it just removes them from MP3Tag.
  • If you've already added the new group, click in the Directory field in the Tag Panel and press Enter. This will cause MP3Tag to reload only the files in that directory.
