Tag Bundles/Hierarchy
Tag Bundles/Hierarchy
I would love the ability to organise tags into bundles or a hierarchy so that when you bring up the tag list for searching or adding tags you can focus on only the tags that're relevant to your task without having to scroll through all the others.

Re: Tag Bundles/Hierarchy
Hi and welcome!
Well, this kind of bundling is not planned, but there are recent developments that you can use to go into that direction by yourself.
See here (only available in the recent beta version!):
So you can generate several such "Tags" categories and then do the bundling yourself, by removing different items from each category.

Code: Select all
v14.00.0109 - 2014-05-10 12:20
+ Catalog | Context Menu | Insert as New Category Here: Added command "Tags"
by which you can add all Tags used in the tags database to the Catalog as
a new "Click and Search" Category. The Location defaults to whole PC, tags
database only, and the operator to "AND".
Don't know about you, but IMO this is a dream come true!

+1, I was going to ask that myself if I would not have seen this by chance.ohno wrote:I would love the ability to organise tags into bundles or a hierarchy so that when you bring up the tag list for searching or adding tags you can focus on only the tags that're relevant to your task without having to scroll through all the others.
It is very sadadmin wrote:Well, this kind of bundling is not planned
This could maybe work if there was a static tags list that would never change (any change results in too much work of reconfiguring the bundles) and even then it would only be a workaround since the the bundles would only be active in the catalog. my 2 cents.admin wrote:So you can generate several such "Tags" categories and then do the bundling yourself, by removing different items from each category.
But the new tag-thingy for the catalog is great!!!!

Re: Tag Bundles/Hierarchy
I've always wanted to organize tags via a hierarchy. My preference is to link tags to groups (could be another tag) in a parent-child, one-to-many style. Here, only the "most relevant" detail of the organizational scheme is saved and/or displayed. This may be best implemented as a new tag-datatype. All of this would be required user setup, but could be shareable if implemented as similar XYplorer lists. The result, searching by "phone" would expand to return Apple, Samsung, HTC, ... and the subitems would become checkbox filters on the resultset. This might be possible via a tag prefix, by very cluttered UI and precious screenspace, and exact naming/rename of prefixes to reorganize tag list. This would be very useful for reorganize tags... life and work happens, importance of relationships change.
The same term could be used in multiple places (on different "branches", but not more than once in the same up/down path). In such a case, a global search would return all instances (to the term, but not auto-expand to subitems) with the hierarchy as the name, ex. search of "tags:account"

Re: Tag Bundles/Hierarchy
I'd like to add my +1 to this suggestion too. I run categories of articles like:
-part datasheets (that would be tagged by function)
-Magazine Article (Tagged by category, content, author, etc)
-Web Pages (tagged by category, content, etc)
-e-mails (Tagged by categories of contents)
-schematics (tagged by function and parts content)
-photos (tagged by people, events, location)
-Personal documents (tagged by event, categories, etc).
Right now, I have about 200 tags and am hesitant to add more because tagging is tough with that many. If a tag hierarchy was available, the list for each type might not exceed 10 or 20.

Re: Tag Bundles/Hierarchy
Yes, I wish there was a way to group tags and have that reflected in the drop-down menus of the tag buttons. Since tags operate from a basic tag.dat file, isn't it just a matter of designating a special character to create a tag hierarchy?
EDIT: Nevermind, I found this thread to be very useful.
