I found the setting for confirming drag and drop operations, but can't find one to require confirmation of deletes. It must be there somewhere.

This is handled by Windows. In XY you can only turn it OFF, not ON:

Configuration | File Operations | Miscellaneous | Suppress delete confirmation dialog

Note that in Win8 "Confirming Deletes" is by default turned off (clearly in the top ten of MS's most stupid moves). You can turn it back on the Properties of the Recycle Bin (sic and sigh...).
