Yeah, pretty much as per thread's title. I could not find anything in the changelog or on the forum that would explain why this is enforced, hence the question. My use case is that I like "Large Tiles" view in order to visualise space utilisation across multiple drives. Having "Auto-Refresh" perma-suspended pretty much flushes that down the drain.

Computer is not watchable the way other folders are watched.

But Computer is a collection of "folders", except those folder are drives. If those drives can be individually watched, why can they not be watched collectively under the hood of Computer?

It's not. But it's always on for a search. Reason: Have static results for the point in time you made the search.

I definitely like to have everything up to date - as soon as I hit the Enter key. WHY NOT?
I don't always get what I want. :-)
I keep the Auto refresh on at all times. I often get the impression that I need to hit the F5 key.
This in spite of having a premium fast PC with 4K monitors.

1) Yes, column refreshes while modifying a file
1) Yes, and I can't change it (unticked in fresh instance)

It's in the menu: View | Suspend Auto-Refresh.

Often? Never here. Let me know the conditions.

Generally: If the process responsible for the changes does not notify Windows then I have no chance of knowing.

I figured out what enforces "Suspend Auto-Refresh"; the Auto-Refresh in branch view option was not ticked.
